DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
The Campus Police Patrol Officer is a sworn peace officer, having met all applicable requirements of the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. Under general supervision, performs functions related to the preservation of public peace and order, the prevention and detection of crime, the apprehension of offenders, the protection of persons and property, the enforcement of laws of the State of Illinois and the rules and regulations of Prairie State College. Performs a variety of law enforcement and security related duties to ensure the safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors, and maintain security of the college property and facilities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Patrols college properties in an effort to proactively preserve law and order and achieve positive public relations.
- Responds to public safety emergencies, complaints, concerns or questions; administers proper procedures to ensure public safety; conducts criminal investigations; enforces parking regulations, controls and direct traffic.
- Conducts traffic accident investigations.
- Prepares applicable crime and incident reports.
- Maintains visible patrols of college property and surrounding areas to deter criminal activity.
- Identifies and investigates criminal activity, safety and fire hazards and other incidents/complaints.
- Responds to life and property emergencies; responsible for immediate evaluation of the emergency and notification of emergency support personnel; performs self defense measures.
- Initiates and completes follow-up investigations.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides public assistance; participate in community service activities; uses safe work practices and procedures, and provides customer service.
- Maintains clean and serviceable equipment.
- Maintains law enforcement presence at college functions and provide escorts as needed.
- Serves as presenter to college community in self-defense measures, personal safety awareness and crime prevention
- Provides additional patrols via mountain bicycle for strategic areas of campus to include pedestrian routes.
- Responsible for the care and use of firearms.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and procedures of law enforcement and traffic control.
- Attains and maintains Basic First Aid, CPR and AED certifications.
- Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Must be able to walk on foot patrol and physically check doors and windows of buildings. Must be able to pursue fleeing suspects and perform rescue operations which may involve quickly entering and exiting law enforcement patrol vehicles, lifting, carrying and dragging heavy objects, climbing and pulling oneself over obstacles, jumping down from elevated surfaces, climbing through openings, jumping over obstacles, crawling in confined areas, balancing on uneven or narrow surfaces and using body force to gain entrance through barriers.
EQUIPMENT/TOOLS USED:
Utilizes standard police/public safety equipment in order to perform the duties of the job including; patrol vehicles, firearms, police radios, and related law enforcement equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be 21 years of age and a citizen of the United States.
- Associates Degree in Criminal Justice or related field or 60 hours of college credit from an accredited college or equivalent combination of education and experience at an accredited college; or police agency; or 4 years of continuous active duty service (Honorable) with the U.S. Armed Forces.
- Must complete the Law Enforcement Basic Training Course at a law enforcement training academy or equivalent training program approved by the Illinois Law Enforcement Standards and Training Board.
- Valid Illinois driver's license
- Personal history with no criminal conviction(s)
- Demonstrated oral, written and interpersonal skills.
- Must have tact and the ability to communicate with people and be able to take command of a wide variety of situations, some of them life-threatening.Â
- Demonstrated knowledge of basic criminal law.
- Must be able to interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.
- Must pass a physical agility, background investigation, written exam, psychological exam and drug screening.
- Must be able to meet physical fitness standards as defined by the Illinois Law Enforcement Standards and Training Board and the college.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors’ degree in Criminal Justice, Police Science or other related field.
- Completion of Illinois Mandatory Training Act Certification.
- Demonstrated knowledge of basic Illinois criminal law and procedure via documented public safety training programs/certification/course work in criminal law.
